Alex Foxen is one of the most recognizable players in poker these days, and he’s also one of the most feared players. No one likes to see him at the poker table, but that’s not because of his personality. Instead, it’s because he’s such a difficult player to face. He rarely makes noticeable mistakes at the highest stakes and has been a consistent performer for quite some time.

Who is Alex Foxen?

William Alexander Foxen, born February 1, 1991, grew up in New York and was quite the athlete during school and afterward. Before he became a superstar poker pro, he was one heck of a football player, and earned a scholarship to play Division 1 football at Boston College University, a solid Atlantic Coast Conference program.

Along with competing on the football field, and now the felt, at a high level, Foxen is also known for being the long-time boyfriend of Canadian poker pro Kristen Bicknell, one of the top female poker players in history.

Foxen’s rise to fame in poker almost never happened, as his first true passion was to play in the National Football League. As a collegiate athlete at Boston College, he signed as a tight end for the Eagles, but spent much of his playing time on the bench. The future poker pro never caught a pass in a regular season game.

In high school, however, he was a three-sport star (football, lacrosse, and hockey), and earned all-conference honors in New York his senior year in football as a tight end. The talented athlete would take on a different path in life following his Boston College days. He found another game he could excel in, and also make a ton of money.

The college football player became a professional poker player in his early 20’s, and the decision sure turned out to be a smart move. Less than 10 years after hitting the felt professionally, he’s been one of the best players in the world for the past five years, and he’s shown some impressive results against the toughest competition.

Foxen/Bicknell collusion scandal

Foxen and Bicknell form one of the most popular couples in poker. They’re both respected players not only for their talents on the felt, but also because they are considered to be of high character. But there was one incident in 2018 that had many poker players questioning if they colluded during a poker tournament with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line.

In a $5,000 buy-in Mid-States Poker Tour Main Event at Venetian in Las Vegas, Foxen and Bicknell were both still alive three-handed. After Phong Nguyen busted in 4th place, the couple asked Kahle Burns on a break if he’d agree to a three-way ICM chop. Burns, who was an up-and-coming poker star from Australia at the time, declined the offer. He wanted to play out the game in search of the $300,000 1st place prize, despite being last in chips at the time.

Burns would eventually bust in 3rd place and took home $120,000, but he would have earned more had he agreed to the chop. During three-handed play, there were a few questionable hands played between the poker power couple, including one pot in which Foxen only lost a relatively small amount, with pocket jacks against Foxen’s pocket aces. Many poker players on social media questioned if Bicknell didn’t go light on her boyfriend so that they’d both finish in the top two. After Burns busted, the couple agreed to a heads-up chop, but played it out with Foxen winning the tournament.

Alex Foxen poker accomplishments

Alex Foxen is the only two-time Global Poker Index Player of the Year in history. He won the award, which is based on points accumulated in tournaments around the globe throughout the year, in 2018 and 2019. He didn’t have an opportunity to take down the award in 2020 due to COVID-19, which forced the cancellation of nearly every poker tournament after February.

The former football star has over $17.5 million in live tournament cashes, and that would likely be over $20 million if not for the pandemic. His most prestigious win came in 2019 at Bellagio in the $10,000 buy-in WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic, arguably the most important event on the World Poker Tour, for $1,694,995.

His largest score, however, came in 2018, a 2nd place finish to Isaac Haxton in the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas. Foxen doesn’t have a World Series of Poker bracelet, but he has 39 cashes in bracelet events and won a WSOP Circuit event in 2011 months after his 21st birthday.

But let’s just say there’s a pretty good chance he isn’t stuck eating Ramen Noodles and TV dinners, unless he really enjoys that type of food.
