It might not have the had the same wild excitement and swings we experienced on Day 5 of the 2023 WSOP Main Event, but Day 7 brought us a lot closer to identifying the champion.
The 49 players who began the day ended up as 15 when all the dust settled, after some quick early eliminations settled into a slow burn after dinner.
Big chip leader from A Coruña
Juan Maceiras Lapido started the day as chip leader and he found himself in the same spot to end the night with a lead of more than 30 million over second. The Spanish native proudly repped his hometown club of Deportivo La Coruña, wearing the kit of the once elite club.
He was talkative with his opponents, most notably with Josh Payne who was the second largest stack to start the day, and the two seemed locked at the hip all day long. Maceiras won the majority of the battles between the two and took several other key pots to come out with a dominating lead at the top.
Walton surges with house over flush on final hand
Surging to second place was Adam Walton who won the final hand of the night with a full house over the flush of Anirban Das, to brutally end the hopes for an Indian Main Event champion. Walton now sits comfortably in second place and is poised to make a serious run at the title.
Jan Peter-Jachtmann and Steven Jones are both not too far behind Walton. Both had very solid Day 7s and steadily built their stacks all day; Jachtmann doing so on the feature table while Jones did so more under the radar on the outer tables.
Look out for Lewis!
The most accomplished player left in the field is Toby Lewis in fifth, who got a great start to the day with a very early double and rode it out from there to sit in the slipstream.
He’s the player that no one will want to tussle with and will provide the star power if he makes the final table.
Two of the other most notable names left, Daniel Weinman and Alec Torelli, both finished the night on a bit of a downswing, particularly Torelli who sent a lot of his stack over to Sachin Joshi after a late night call against a turned set.
The final 15 advancing to Day 8 is made up of six Americans, four British players, two Spaniards, a Ukrainian, a German and an Italian.
Notables eliminated: Yokosawa and Hawkins out
Of the players who were sent to the rail as the day progressed, the most notable were popular Japanese youtube Masato Yokosawa who bowed out in 45th place, Maurice Hawkins in 35th place and Ryan Tosoc in 25th place.
It all means we’re set for a very exciting day – one of our favourites of the year – on Friday as we play down to the final table, where the majority of the $93,399,900 will be distributed. The winner will get a whopping $12,100,000.
